more air still

The ventriculostomy drain in Bill's head has not been draining much fluid, and there have been no bubbles to suggest air drainage either. The critcal care staff doctor flushed the drain and then was able to suck out 30 mL (6 teaspoons) of air. It seemed like Bill perked up quite a bit afterwards, ate a full breakfast, could name Nancy and knew he had 3 daughters. So, they got a repeat head CT to see how things looked after the removal of air. The CT was disappointing -- there was no improvement in the amount of air around the brain and possibly a bit more than before.

We're pretty discouraged at this news as it means that there still is an air leak. There was no CSF leaking from the sinus hole when they checked several days ago, so there might be a one-way leak that lets air in, but not CSF out (a ball-valve mechanism). We're waiting to hear what the neurosurgey and ENT teams think, but since it's the weekend, it may be Monday before any new plans are made.

After the CT scan, Bill has been very sleepy and difficult to wake up. Please pray that the teams come up with a good plan for finding (and then fixing) the air leak.

  1. Dear Gezon Family: You are continually in our thoughts and prayers as you go thru this difficult time. We pray for healing for Bill and wisdom for his doctors. We have missed seeing you but are glad you are at U of M. Nancy, thanks for steping out of Bill's room and talking to me a minute in ICU Monday. I think my Dad was alittle overwhelmed with seeing where he had been for 10 days and the nurses that came and said "Hi" to him. He has improved so much in a weeks time. He came home today with a walker. Praise the Lord!! We pray that Bill too can come home soon. Best Wishes and God Bless - Kandy Suwyn and the Russ Warner Family
